Spring Clean the Medicine Cabinet with National Prescription Take Back Day this Saturday

Inspired by Dawn supports the national prescription take back day for safe disposal of medications

Kick off your spring cleaning with the medicine cabinet. Or wherever you currently have expired or unused medication piling up. Take the opportunity this Saturday, April 29th - from 10am to 2pm - to safely and effortlessly get rid of that old medication at the National Prescription Take-Back Day.

On Saturday, as part of this national initiative, communities across the country will provide locations for you to easily dispose of unused medication and prevent it from contaminating our soil and water, or getting into the wrong hands for misuse. So clean out the medicine cabinet and drop off those medications on Saturday. How to Hold Onto Your Post-Vacation Glow in 2 Steps

If you're lucky enough to be traveling this week, hopefully you've been able to unplug, truly relax and connect with family and / or friends. It's always amazing what a little change of scenery and routine can do to reinvigorate a person's soul. But how do you hold onto that refreshed feeling once you've returned to real life? In case, you need some ideas as the week wraps up here's few tips from the experts and a New York Times article from two years ago...

The first tip is the joy of planning, but since you've already done that we'll skip to the reentry portion of vacationing. Once you're back practice steps one and two early and often.

Step #1 - Reminisce - Essentially give yourself reasons and opportunities to relive your vacation with fondness. Pictures, foods, souvenirs, etc. serve as easy ways to look back with fondness on your time away and remember the good feelings and emotions attached to it.

Step #2 - Retreat - Give yourself permission to go to your vacation spot in your mind whenever you need to. When the stress of reentry is building give yourself two minutes to go away in your mind. Relish that sunset again or feel the sand between your toes. It will likely refocus you and reduce your stress.

Spring Break Travel Plans Include Flying? 4 Pre-Trip To Dos for an Easier (and Healthier) Flight

If you're traveling for Spring Break next week and your plans include flying, you know it's going to be stressful. It always is these days. No matter how much you plan ahead.

So we've put together a list of four easy things to do before your flight to make it just a little easier (and healthier!).

  1. Be in the Know - Download a flight tracking app that will automatically alert you of any flight delays for your itinerary. Travel + Leisure suggests FlightStats (free, iOS only)
  2. Carry-On Essentials - Don't forget your medications and/or vitamins that you normally take and definitely don't pack them in your checked luggage. Keep them close at all times (and organized) in your carry-on bag
  3. Know Thy Size - Speaking of carry-ons, check to make sure yours is within your airline's size guidelines. Airlines seem to be getting stingier on this all the time so just check and avoid an unnecessary surprise at the airport
  4. Stay Healthy - Pack a couple of anti-bacterial wipes in a sandwich baggie for wiping down the tray table, arm rests and even your hotel's remote and light switches when you get to your destination. Hopefully you can stave off a cold or flu and avoid being sick for your return trip home

Healthy Start to St. Patrick's Day | Inspiration Smoothie

Inspired by Dawn shares a healthy smoothie recipe to start you St. Patrick's Day off right

It's often said that on St. Patrick's Day everyone is Irish. But as you may know, St. Patrick's Day revelry often encompasses less-than healthful food and drink - from fatty corned beef to green beer, and lots of other treats along the way.

So in honor of all things green and healthy, we were inspired to mix up a green smoothie to get your Friday off to a lucky and healthy start this St. Patrick's Day. Balance out the day's indulgences with this morning's nutritious start.

St. Patty's Day Inspiration Smoothie

2 Servings
2 Frozen very ripe bananas
1C Berries (strawberries, blueberries, etc.)
3C Milk
16oz Greek yogurt
1T Pure vanilla extract
2.5C Spinach or Kale

6 Steps to Surviving the Daylight Savings Time Change

Inspired by Dawn's plan to embracing sleep and health during daylight savings time change

As researchers continue to uncover the links between sleep and health, getting enough ZZZs becomes increasingly important. After all, on an average week are you getting 7+ hours of sleep per night? Most of us aren't. Then you add in events we can't control, like Daylight Savings time, and it's a recipe for a very drowsy Monday.

So to help you stave off a groggier than usual start to the week, we've put together a plan that you can start now to help you get the sleep you need and feel refreshed on Monday.

Now through Friday
  •  Go to bed earlier than your normal time - even 10 minutes each day can make a difference
 Saturday
  • Exercise outdoors so you get the sunlight and fresh air your body craves and expend some energy
  • Exercise early enough in the day that your body's temp can cool down enough to enable you to sleep
Sunday
  • Get up at your normal time so your body can adjust to the time and light shift
  • Go for a morning walk, ideally an hour or longer, again so can give your body a chance to adjust to the sunlight and help reset your body clock
  • If all else fails, consider taking melatonin one hour before bed to help you get the rest you need

    A Daily Rx for Active, Healthy Living - For Now & Far Into the Future

    Inspired by Dawn shares insights on small daily changes that can help improve long-term health

    It's seems nearly inevitable that once you pass a certain age you will rely on a handful of medications to manage whichever disease or chronic health issue(s) impacts you most severely and diminishes your quality of life. For better or worse, it's how our health care system is set-up - cure disease rather than prevent it.

    However, we're also fortunate to live in a time where increasingly more information is being pieced together on how to prevent diseases that often present themselves as we age. Large gaps in the wellness and prevention puzzle are being filled in and hopefully promising us an increasingly active, healthy lifestyle not limited by age.

    At Inspired by Dawn we're big believers in how we eat, sleep, exercise and interact with the world around us on a daily basis can, and will, have an impact on our future health and wellness. We have choices everyday and those choices add up. And those choices don't always have to be a bummer. It doesn't have to be ice cream or spinach! It can be easy, healthful and often tasty trade-offs that we decide to make to feel better now and for a long time to come.

    So, we're going to rededicate ourselves to sharing easy, helpful changes that we can all make to help prevent diseases like cancer, alzheimer's disease, diabetes, heart disease, and others, and hopefully live more healthful and active lives for much, much longer.
