You want a quick fix, right? Truth be told we all do. We know what we should be eating - more fruits and vegetables and whole foods, more food made it home, less take out, etc. - to maximize our health. But we also know, all too often, life gets in the way. We don't make it to the grocery store or traffic keeps us from getting home in time to pre-heat the oven. Next thing we know we're turning to take out.

To help you put an end to the vicious cycle we wanted to share some tips on how making a few small changes in the kitchen can set you up for healthful eating success in 2018.   1. Clean off the counters - get rid of old newspapers, mail, appliances you don't use daily or don't support healthy eating (toaster vs blender); go ahead and leave a fruit bowl though!
  2. Downsize your dinnerware - eat dinner off your salad plates, pour yourself a drink in a tall skinny glass and leave the large serving bowls for special occasions
  3. Portion and snack control - make a big pot of something but freeze half of it right away, stash warehouse food purchases and snack foods in locations other than the kitchen so they're not easily accessible

6 Tips to Make the Big (or Little) Changes You Want in the New Year

2018 is a clean slate. You have 360+ days to still make it whatever you want it to be. That's the power of the new year. A natural place to pause, look back on the year that is past and decide what you want for the year ahead. Do you want more of something or less of something in your life? Do you want to learn something new, start volunteering or just eat less take out? Whether you're focused on big changes or little ones here's some tips from LifeHacker to help make them reality.

  1. Make sure your life is in order - Forming a new habit is hard enough. Don't try to do it when your life is already especially hectic
  2. Focus on one good habit - Don't overwhelm yourself. Choose one healthful habit at a time and focus
  3. Work yourself into it gradually - Set mini-goals for yourself. The first week I'll cook two meals at home, the next week three.
  4. Piggyback it with other, already-formed habits or routines - Tie taking a multivitamin each day to something you already do every day, e.g. put your daily pill box on your keyboard so you take your vitamin when you sit down to check emails in the morning
  5. Get an accountability buddy - The right, like-minded friend makes everything easier
  6. Give it time - It can take awhile to truly form a habit, so set yourself up for success with the above suggestions to keep yourself motivated and focused

Holiday Travel - 11 Steps to Prep Your House & Your Self for Being Away From Home

Inspired by Dawn's pre-trip holiday travel tips for your home and for your carryon bag

Are you headed over the hills and through the woods for your holiday gathering? If so, you have a lot you're trying to remember to pack - presents, cookies, hostess gifts, etc. With your mental list long, we've one thing easier. A go-to checklist to help you remember what to do to prepare your house before you leave and the one thing to pack to ensure you're prepared for wherever your travels take you. 'Tis the season!

Security
Light timers - Set a lamp or two to turn on and off at different times so the casual observer will not suspect you're out of town
Close & lock windows & doors - Seems obvious but take a second and check all the doors and windows. You don't want to be hours or days into your trip and wonder if the back door ever got locked
Hold mail & newspaper - No need to signal that you're away with a pile of mail and newspapers out front. Both can be put on vacation hold with just a few simple clicks online
Garbage cans - Make sure you bring garbage cans in from the curb before you leave or ask a neighbor to do it for you. Again it's just one less signal that you're away

Saving $s
Hot water tank - Save some dollars for your trip and turn down the thermostat on the hot water tank so you're not heating water you're not using
Adjust thermostat - Turn down the thermostat while you're gone as well. Again a good dollar saver

Cleaning & Maintaining
Clean refrigerator - Not a necessity but nice to not come home to a few science experiments. Take a minute and dump out all the old leftovers
Run dishwasher - Also not a necessity but always nice to not wonder if the dishes are clean or dirty. However, if you forget to do this the odor will often tell you!
